Currency (Bank Notes & Coins)

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA) is the country’s sole currency issuing authority as mandated by Section 9 (a) of the RMA Act 2010. Further to execute the Section 91 of RMA Act 2010, Department of Currency Management (DCM) is responsible for design, production and overall management of the nation’s currency with the goal of ensuring an adequate supply of clean and genuine banknotes.

The DCM distributes adequate quantity of currency throughout the country ensuring the quality of banknotes in circulation through continuous supply of clean notes and timely withdrawal of soiled notes.

This is achieved through a wide network of 15 currency chests of which 12 commercial banks, 2 RMA Regional Offices and 1 RMA Exchange Counter. Currency chests are extended arms of the Department of Currency Management and are responsible for meeting the currency requirements of their respective regions.

Moreover, DCM works towards maintaining confidence in the currency through new design and incorporation of security features.
