Access to Convertible Currency for Travel Abroad

    Monday-Friday (Except for public holidays)
    Morning: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
    Afternoon: 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM
    Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Q1: How much USD can I obtain for a personal travel?

A1:If you are traveling for a private purpose, you can get USD 3,000/- per annum as follows;

  1. Up to USD 1,000/- in cash
  2. Up to USD 2,000/- in international cards*.

Documents Required

  1. Copy of confirmed air ticket/visa for travel to third country
  2. Copy of Valid CID/Passport/Marriage Certificate card for non-Bhutanese or any other proof of being resident in Bhutan
  3. Any other documentary evidence required
*For top up in the international cards, kindly contact your respective banks few days prior to your travel abroad

Q2:How much CC am I entitled to if I am traveling for medical and education purposes?

A2:You can claim CC for the purpose of medical and education as follows;

  1. Medical Travel;

    USD 1,500/- per travel.

    Documents Required
    1. Copy of confirmed air ticket for third country
    2. Copy of Valid CID/Passport/Marriage Certificate card for non-Bhutanese or any other proof of being resident in Bhutan
    3. Referral letter from JDWNRH for referral case and Past Medical documents/letter of appointment for privately sponsored patients

  2. Education Travel

    USD 1,000/- per annum

    Documents Required
    1. Copy of confirmed air ticket/visa for travel to third country
    2. Copy of Valid CID/Passport or any other proof of being resident in Bhutan
    3. Acceptance/Letter of admission for new students and Valid Student ID Card for continuing students

Q3:How much USD can I obtain for official travel to Countries other than India (COTI)? What documents are required for availing the allowance?

A3:Allowances can be availed as follows:

  1. Per day allowance - As per Ministry of Finance (MoF)/Multinational Organization’s rate for their employees
  2. Incidental for head of delegation - As per the rate approved by the RGOB
Documents Required
  1. Copy of confirmed air ticket;
  2. Authorization letter from respective agencies specifying details of travel including name of officials, duration, country of travel
  3. Authorization to debit agency’s account maintained with the bank or by way of a cheque drawn by the agency on such account

Q4:How much USD can I obtain for business travel to COTI? What documents are required for availing the allowance?

A4:USD- As per Ministry of Finance (MoF)

Documents Required
  1. Copy of air ticket
  2. Authorization letter from respective business specifying details of travel including name of officials, duration, country of travel, and payment details
  3. Authorization of travel by respective agency such as Tourism Council of Bhutan for tour operators, Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industries for private business firm, company or organization
  4. Any other documentary evidence required

Q5:Furthermore, in addition to the aforementioned facilities, am I eligible to avail CC to meet incidental expenses?

A5:Yes, you can avail USD 500/- to meet your incidental expenses if your route includes more than 2 stopovers.

Q6:If I have an FC account, what are some enhanced accessibilities linked to the account that I am eligible for?

A6:If you are an individual and have a Foreign Currency account, you are eligible for the following:

  1. Cash Withdrawals:
    • Up to USD 3,000/- per travel (travel documents required)
    • Up to USD 1,000/- cash per month provided you fall under FC I category
    Documents Required
    1. Copy of confirmed air ticket/visa for travel to third country or any other travel documents
    2. Copy of Valid CID/Passport/Marriage Certificate card for non-Bhutanese or any other proof of being resident in Bhutan
  2. Bank Transfers:
    • Remittance of Stipend & Student Living Allowance (SLA) amounting to USD 4800/ INR 1,00,000 per month (or) clubbing of SLA for up to three months for remittance

    1. Invoice
    2. Acceptance/ letter of admission/ Valid student card for continuing students
    3. Any other documentary evidence required
  3. International Cards:
    • Allowed to top up 100% of the FC account balance on the International cards.
