Currency Declaration at Paro International Airport

The Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) would like to inform the general public that the authority would be implementing Currency Declaration System at Paro International Airport starting 1st July 2024. The following sections of the Rules and Regulations requires the general public to declare currency to the Customs at the point of entry or exit.

1.        Any person leaving or entering Bhutan with an amount in cash, bearer negotiable instruments (BNIs) or both, with the value exceeding USD 10,000/- or more shall declare such amount to Customs at the point of entry or exit as per Section 186 of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering of Financing of Terrorism (AML and CFT) Rules and Regulations 2022. 

2.        Any person taking out in cash exceeding USD 10,000/- or more shall be subject to the condition that such person obtains clearance from the RMA and makes a declaration of the same to Customs as per Section 7(b) of Foreign Exchange Rules and Regulations 2022.

3.        Non-compliance to above requirements shall be confiscated and may be prosecuted by the relevant agencies if the act is deemed to be an offence under laws of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Therefore, the RMA solicits general public’s cooperation in meeting the requirements as per Rules and Regulation in vogue.
